The solar energy investment credit originally available for the 2006 and 2007 tax years has been extended through December 31, 2008. The residential credit of 30%, up to a maximum of $2000, is available for qualified solar electric and hot water systems. The business credit of 30% has no cap. The Solar Energy Industries Association (SEIA) has created a FAQ sheet that provides more information about the credit. The IRS also provides information about the residential credit in its Form 5695, Residential Energy Credits. Information on the business investment credit for solar systems is avaible in IRS Form 3468. These credits can save you a considerable amount on a new solar system.
